Denison University

Overview

Located in Granville, Ohio, Denison University embodies the essence of a liberal arts education, balancing rigorous academics with a vibrant student life. Its hilltop campus, just a short drive from Columbus, offers students a mix of community-centered support, dynamic academic programs, and a picturesque setting.

First Impressions of the Campus

Denison’s campus is strikingly beautiful. Set against rolling hills and accented by Georgian-style architecture, the campus combines an expansive feel with the intimacy of a small college. The fall colors on my visit added to the charm. Just a walk from campus, the small-town warmth of Granville complements Denison’s community vibe.

Academics

Denison, with a student body under 2,500, emphasizes small class sizes, fostering a personalized learning environment. Professors are accessible and deeply invested in student success. True to the liberal arts model, Denison’s curriculum includes General Education, Major, and Elective courses. Students also engage in First-Year Seminars and complete an interdivisional requirement, choosing a course from seven interdisciplinary programs, which include International Studies and Queer Studies.

Some of Denison’s most distinctive programs are in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics (PPE) and Global Commerce. Although Denison does not offer a traditional business degree, Global Commerce fills that niche, integrating economics courses, language proficiency, an off-campus experience, and a capstone project. Programs in Economics, Biology, Political Science, Health, Data Analytics, and Theater are also strong. The Data Analytics department will soon have its own building, reflecting the program’s growing importance.

To support the transition into college, Denison offers an advising circle for all first-year students, including faculty advisors, upper-class peer mentors, and groups of 6–8 first-year students who meet weekly. Sophomores and juniors can also participate in Denison Seminars for hands-on learning experiences, which often include travel and collaborative projects led by faculty from various disciplines.

The Knowlton Center for Career Exploration is another key asset, helping students bridge academics and careers. Students can access short-term certification programs, internships, and networking opportunities, preparing them well for life after graduation. The center also provides personalized career coaching and connects students with Denison’s robust alumni network.

Student Life and Activities

Denison’s community is close-knit, with over 100 student organizations covering a wide range of interests—from academic societies to recreational sports and cultural clubs. Greek life is present, though it doesn’t overshadow campus culture, providing students flexibility to engage at their own pace.

Housing and Dining

Denison guarantees housing for all four years, building a strong residential community. Recently renovated dorms offer modern, comfortable living spaces, from traditional dorms to suite-style apartments. The two dining halls on campus cater to different dietary needs, providing students with ample options.

Overall Impression

Denison exudes a strong sense of community. Students I spoke with emphasized how responsive the administration is, particularly noting that President Weinberg actively listens to student needs and advocates on their behalf. Denison University’s personalized, engaging environment, rigorous academics, and holistic student support make it a compelling choice for students seeking a robust liberal arts experience.
